Abstract

Background. The author analyzes idioms using Linguistic Culturology, which is a pressing issue in Contemporary Linguistics. The method was worked out at the turn of the 20th/21st centuries and reveals how ethno-cultural information interacts with its reflection in language units. This differs from traditional Phraseology, which focuses mainly on structural and semantic classifications of idioms. The paper aims to study culture codes in Russian and French students’ slang.
Materials and methods. The data for the study was a card index comprising 360 Russian and 380 French idioms. To compile the index the author obtained the data from dictionaries of idioms, from real speech, questionnaires, Internet resources, the mass media, and works of fiction related to students. To analyze the linguistic data the author used descriptive, comparative and statistical methods, abstraction and classification of language units.
Results. The analysis of slang idioms revealed 28 culture codes. Most of them can be found in both substandards. The author puts forward a classification of culture codes in slang idioms and a list of phrases consisting of components interpreted in several cultural codes.
Conclusions. The use of Linguistic Culturology to study slang idioms helps reveal general and specific features in languages under study. It is necessary to explain the meaning of the words that make up idioms because it is an essential element of the analysis worked out in Linguistic Culturology. A major contribution to the development of Social Linguistics would be made if methods of Linguistic Culturology were implemented to conduct comparative-typological studies into sublanguages of various social groups of the Slavs and the Europeans.
